Ficus rubiginosa
I'm new to this forum, and just moved to zone 10. Therefore I MUST start playing with tropicals. Here is my new purchase, a Ficus rubiginosa (Port Jackson fig), as bought, and after the initial chop. I'm told the leaves reduce quite well, but would be interested if anyone here could confirm that.

Thanks Jerry. I just found my copy of your book again after the move. What a relief....was afraid it had gotten lost in the shuffle. I anticipate making much more use of it here.

That is Turface, also known as Profile, or Schultz Clay Soil Conditioner. It's hire fired clay, very well draining, good moisture retention characteristics, and pretty good CEC (fertilizer retention). It is a good inorganic component for bonsai soils. For many of my bonsai, its the only component (100% inorganic). For this one, I mixed it with the original nursery pot soil, and then put a layer of pure turface just on the top.
