I have sometimes found lava rock at a local nursery, but I have more luck at local craft stores. There's a WI brand called Mosser Lee available here, which I don't know how widely spread they are, but they have decorative soils and rocks. A lot of their stuff is for craft purposes, for example they have colored sands which I wouldn't use because of the dyes, but they do do natural rocks as well - including small lava rocks.

How finely crushed? You can get lava rock and pumice at about gravel size in bags at various landscape supply places, Steins, etc.

5mm is standard for crushed volcanic rock....
